The CITY OF LAGOS, WHERE ANCIENT HISTORY MEETS MODERN CULTURE

A few kilometres to the west of Vale da Ribeira, Lagos owes its roots to the Romans and Moors. Integrated into Portugal in 1249, it was from here that Vasco da Gama sailed in 1497 to establish the first direct sea route from Europe to India under the patronage of Prince Henry the Navigator. Remains of defensive forts testify to the turbulent past of the city.
Today Lagos welcomes visitors from many countries, including yachts passing on their way to the Mediterranean or even to the Americas. Daily markets testify to the vitality of local agricultural produce, while artisan shops, boutiques, shoe and leather shops offer a wide choice of locally-made goods. An extensive cultural programme, a wide choice of restaurants and a thriving night life during the summer months make this a 'must' for visitors and residents alike.
